Fostering must be SO much fun!

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard this. And the other night I had an excellent example of how much “fun” fostering can be. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Casey and Ethan are clearly feeling MUCH better. They are so full of beans; they go full speed, racing and leaping here, there, and everywhere. However, they are still having some digestive issues. We got home from work and I locked them in the bathroom with their supper after which they collapsed in exhaustion.

Couldn’t resist adding these, also by Brendan!

I let them sleep for a couple of hours then opened the door to see if they wanted to come out. They did — running everywhere. Since I close the bedroom door and have sealed off any “danger zones”, I only pay attention with a very small portion of my brain. After a while I noticed a smell. An unpleasant smell. I checked the bathroom and, sure enough, someone (turns out BOTH of them) had had an “episode”. A very messy episode. There was litter (not clean litter) tracked/sprayed/spread everywhere. A quick check of their feet confirmed that BOTH of them had stepped in it. And then ran all over the condo!

Not quite as bad as this time, but close. I spent all evening still being able to smell it and discovering new footprints. Fun times.

As an added bonus? Ace overdid it when he got home from his surgery (technically he overdid it in the carrier on the way home, first!) and was spotting a bit. I had to go around cleaning up little blood smears. Found some more poopy footprints from the night before on my rounds. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  (Don’t worry, I checked with my foster coordinator; it’s in the “normal” range of post-op complications and he’s ok.)

In truth, fostering is fun or it can be; these two (Casey & Ethan) are particularly fun to watch run and play. It’s also rewarding. The change in the just over two weeks since they arrived is astounding. But fostering can also be hard work and discouraging and heartbreaking. I’m still not giving it up any time soon!

About Adventures in Cat Fostering

I am a cat fosterer for Toronto Cat Rescue. I also have cats of my own, Jonesy, the black and white, and Murphy, the brown tabby, are in the photo. Little Blue was a foster kitten I kept. All were adopted from Toronto Cat Rescue.

  3. Fun isn’t the first word that would come to my mind. Rewarding does though. And selfless. Foster moms and dads certainly make the rescuing world go round!
