Meet the Foster Cats

Luke was my first foster, adopted after three weeks.

Lawson was found in a feral colony. When they realized how tame she was, she was put in the foster system. After three weeks, she went to an adoption event and was adopted.

Xavi was abandoned in an apartment and not found for three weeks. She was 12 yrs old (maybe older). She was adopted from my home by a delightful young woman who wanted to adopt “a cat that would have a hard time finding a home”.

Rickie was only with me for five days. He went to an adoption event and was snapped up right away.

Mountie was returned to TCR for "litterbox issues". He had none while he was with me. He eventually went to a store and after a month was adopted.

JJ had been at TAS for five months when I got her. She was with me six months, had a bit of a rocky time, but then found the perfect home!

Kitty was taken to TAS because her owner of 12 years wanted to have a baby. I only had her a couple of weeks when she went to an adoption event and was one of the first cats adopted!

Bo came from a hoarding situation. I had him a month and then he was adopted from my home by a wonderful young man who was totally smitten with him.

Baxter was from a hoarding situation. I had him for a little more than a month and then he went to a huge adoptathon put on by PetSmart and the City of Toronto. He was the 350th adoption of the event.

Barnaby came to me because he had an eye infection. Once that cleared up and he reached 2lbs, he went to get neutered, then to a store where he was adopted.

Storm was returned to TCR because her adopter was leaving the country. As of August 2014, she hasn’t been adopted.

Erwin, Eliot, and Emerson (there's one in every family!) Working on getting big enough for their neuter, then off to be adopted!

Erwin, Eliot, and Emerson (there’s one in every family!) were only about three weeks old when they arrived. Bottle fed for the first couple of weeks, they eventually got big enough for neutering and went to an weekend adoption event. All were adopted, of course!

With the stuffed frog that came with him!

Meet Frankie!

Pia was a returnee whose “issues” never presented with me. I had her a couple of weeks and she was adopted from a weekend adoptathon.

Jasmin

Finally in the bed I made her, rather than under the desk.

Benson was dropped off by a volunteer driver. He was emaciated and weak and had a URI. But he was loving and sweet; this photo was taken about two hours after he arrived! Benson was adopted less than a week after being posted to the website.

Archie arrived from TAS, a growling, hissing little guy who hid for the first week and a half. In about 48 hours he changed into a house cat that loved attention. The mark on his nose is a scab from rubbing his cage at TAS. Archie was quickly adopted, but was returned less than two weeks later. Archie was finally adopted on April 11, 2015 from an adoption event at Wag on the Danforth.

Carson is from a group rescued in Quebec. He is a gentle, reserved guy that will need a lot of patience to win his trust. He was adopted on April 11, 2015 from the same adoption event as Archie. Sadly, Carson was diagnosed with FIP a week later and died on April 20, 2015.

Glamour shot! Definitely going on the website!

Sweet Cora was pretty sick when she arrived from TAS and later had a bad flare-up of her cold after her spay surgery. She is a very small cat, less than four pounds, even though she’s almost full grown! Cora was adopted at an adoption event on April 18, 2015.

Mom cat “Leah” arrived late on a Saturday afternoon April 11th, 2015, a supposed stray that had given birth ten days earlier, delivered by the person who found her. She was rushed to the emergency clinic that night in septic shock. She survived after having emergency surgery to remove two dead kittens. She came back to me the next weekend, just for Saturday and Sunday, then returned to vet care, making steady progress until she went into foster care. Eventually she was adopted.

Leah, on her weekend furlough from the vet clinic. She spent more time at the vet and later when into foster care.

Leah’s babies stayed with me, were bottle fed for two days, and then acquired a surrogate mom that already had one baby.

The Outlanders

Mama Claire and the Outlander kittens. Claire was finally adopted after almost seven months.

Arthur making himself at home. Arthur had to stay longer than expected because of crystals in his urine. Once that was cleared up he went to an adoption event and got snapped up right away!

Abigail; one of 16 cats brought up from London. A sweetie from the start she loved attention and cuddles. Abigail was adopted three weeks after joining us, before she could even go to an adoption event.

Gilbert&Sullivan

Gilbert (right, darker) and Sullivan (left, lighter) were from a really bad hoarding situation here in Toronto and arrived late in July 2015. All the cats were purebred Ragdoll and Himilayan cats. Not surprisingly, these guys were adopted less than a week after being posted.

Arabelle arrived with her five kittens plus Hamish, a stray added to her litter.

Soon after arrival, Arabelle began rejecting the kittens. She was sent to be spayed, then fostered to fatten her up (she was skeletally thin), then to a store where she was quickly adopted.
The kittens were split up into other foster homes; Merida to one, Angus and Elinor to another, and Willow and Harris into a third. Hamish, who needed some extra care, stayed with me. That made room for Gabby and her family, the “Hell on Wheels” gang, who needed to get out of their rescuer’s home quickly.

The kittens were sent for surgery/store/adoption when they were big enough. Cullen, Nell, & Lily; then Hamish, Eva, & Mickey; finally Lou & Mei. Gabby went for her spay about the same time as the first three kittens. She was taken to a store and within an hour she was adopted. The kittens were all adopted (with multiple applications!) within days of arriving at the store. Hamish was incredibly difficult to give up. “Mr. Personality” made friends and fans wherever he went. He had admirers on the street (waiting for the bus), at work (one co-worker was almost ready to ignore her allergies and adopt him), and at the vet (Dr. Amanda couldn’t even say “goodbye” when he left). I agonized over the decision. But I knew three cats would be too much and would limit my ability to foster. He’ll be the one that got away for a while.

I was sweet Ella's second foster. She came to me after a visit to the vet for severe dehydration. I was told she was deaf and visually impaired. The vet diagnosed oxygen deprivation at some point. Turns out there was little or nothing wrong with her hearing and her vision was better than we thought. She was a little "special". Adorably so!

Regine

Regine

Regine and Shakira came from a hoarding situation in Quebec, via the Humane Society International (HSI). Though not bonded, they were happier with each other. They were adopted, separately, from our adoption centre in PetSmart (Kennedy Commons) and follow-ups reported them very happy!

Maggie was transferred from a shelter in London, ON. She was only with us a couple of weeks before she was moved to our adoption centre in PetSmart (Kennedy Commons). She was VERY happy in the adoption centre and was adopted in a few days!

IMG_4415

Adorable Cricket spent quite a bit of time at one of our vets before being transferred to foster care. She’s a heterochromia kitty; one blue eye one green eye! She was adopted by another foster parent!

IMG_4521

Sweet Oprah arrived a shelter in London. She was supposed to be with me two weeks, just for quarantine, and then go straight to a store. Less than a week after she arrived we discovered she was pregnant! She had five kittens on March 19, 2016. Three weeks later she accepted two orphans to foster.

Gentle Percy’s owner died. The owner’s daughter then threw Percy out on the street. Some nice people watched out for him, fed him, and contacted TCR. He was 10 yrs. old and had kidney disease. ONE DAY after being posted a lovely couple arranged to come and see him and they adopted him. He stayed with me for a few more weeks until after their vacation.

Catticus, the pirate kitty, came from a big rescue TCR did called Project Velcro. I had her about a month and she was adopted by a lovely couple (and their dog) who adored her.

Sparkle (now Sophia) just a little more than a week later. She went to an adoption event and was immediately adopted!

Sparkle, “before”. Sparkle was a stray taken into TAS. I picked her up from a TCR vet after a dramatic spay surgery (pyometra) and heavy dental work.

I just stumbled across your blog! You and I started fostering about the same time. I take in high risk kittens for a rescue and over the last three years have had something like 130 kittens. Nearly all found home. I found you you because I was looking for resources for longevity for stunted growth kittens. Your blog about the kitten (picture with a soup can) popped up. My little foster, Miss Molly is a DLH whose teeth say she is 6 months + but whose weigh and size say 12 weeks. extremely ill when she came (we actually thought FIP or toxo until she started to improve). Wondering about the outcome for your small one – is she still with you? Health good?

    • 130 kittens??? Holy smokes! Bravo you! Yeah, it took a little while for Cora to improve, but she had such “spunk”. She was adopted and I’ve had no updates at all since, so I have no idea. Even though I met her adopter I didn’t do her paperwork so I didn’t have her adopter’s contact information. Sometimes adopters will let us know if they’re having issues; nothing has been mentioned to me. None of the veterinarians who saw Cora anticipated any long term problems. Cricket, a more recent foster, was also quite small. Her adopter’s vet thinks she was even smaller (older) than we thought — maybe a couple of months behind. She is blossoming and doing great.

  2. So many cats! Just my four cats keep me occupied, especially Amiga, who insists on sitting on my lap for hours on end. Ethan is a unique name for a kitten, brave and strong. Lovely kittens and cats.
