It has been pointed out to me — very gently — by a couple of people that I haven’t posted about Percy in a while. All that kitten and fundraising excitement. 😉
Percy is fine. He had his blood work re-checked a couple of weeks after I got him. It showed some improvement, but he most definitely has kidney disease. He’s on a daily pill (which he loves thanks to Pill Pockets!) and I’m supposed to be giving him fluids a couple of times a week. However, he hates being caught and, after much discussion, it was decided that at this stage of his illness, the stress of capture would do more harm than the benefit of the fluids. I’m not giving up but we’re going to work on our relationship first.
That relationship suffered a setback last week when Percy had to go to the vet for surgery. Did I mention he doesn’t like being caught? Worse, he had to go the night before for some extra prep and I’m sure, given his history, he thought he was being left there again. His surgery went well. No teeth had to be extracted — just a good cleaning — and they removed the lump on his toe and shoulder. Tests are back and both are benign. When he came home he clearly wasn’t pleased with me and wasn’t going to trust me. 😦 He hid under the bed for days cautiously coming out for meals but running back under if I came near. Finally I had some time to reorganize and I blocked off under the bed. And a few days later, he started to show signs of some of the trust we’d built when he first came. Food helps and I wish I had free reign to give him lots of treats but his condition doesn’t allow that.
He’s still a skittish boy but I’m sure he’ll keep improving. He’s totally fine with other cats (though wary of Oprah and a little freaked out by the new, noisy kittens) and while his prognosis isn’t promising (there’s no cure for kidney disease in cats) he’s stable and mostly happy for now.
