The weather and the temporary closing of Toronto Animal Services (TAS) south shelter (due to the PanAm games) have put a huge strain on the rescue business. Not to mention appalling shit like this. TCR foster homes are already pushed to the max: witness my “illegal” fostering of Abigail. They have put out a number of desperate appeals for new foster homes — even temporary ones.
This weekend we got a special — heartbreaking — posting:
MAJOR RESCUE ALERT – I want to send a heads up that TCR has been called in to assist TAS with a unique large scale emergency situation. This comes at the worst time possible since the shelters are jam packed full and there are more cats on our rescue lists being euthanized than being saved. More details about this emergency situation will be released shortly, but the number of cats involved is much larger than what the shelters can accommodate, even when they are not full to capacity.
We know our foster homes are also at their limit so we are not asking you to take in more. We are asking for your cooperation in getting your existing fosters prepared for adoption as quickly as possible. That means getting the bios in as soon as the 2 week quarantine is up and vetting is completed, even if the cat is not 100% ready for adoption. That means making every effort to get your kittens fixed as soon as they are 2lbs and getting them off to a store for adoption. That means arranging visits with potential adopters as soon as you possibly can. Every single day your foster is with you longer than absolutely necessary, a cat or kitten is killed because we lack the space and resources to help.
TCR is the only hope for these cats. Let’s get our fosters in to their new homes as soon as possible so we can get back to saving lives.
The comments on the post indicate upwards of 70 cats!!! I’m so glad all three of mine are posted; I can’t do much more. Let’s hope the adoptathon next weekend is successful. And more are planned.
If you know anyone who might foster temporarily (there can be very short term fosters), or even better, who might be looking to make a addition to their family. Send them to the TCR website! Please!!!
